Each week Dr Khosi Ngwenya will deal with issues women are too scared or embarrassed to ask their doctor.

Health

Too often we as women may find ourselves rather embarrassed, or afraid that we will be judged if we ask our doctor certain questions regarding our health. According to the World Health Organisation, health is a state of physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing.

No question regarding one’s health is ever too silly, and every question warrants an answer, so we can make an informed decision about our health. Find a list of just a few questions we may sometimes find ourselves a little too shy to ask-answered.

Is this White Vaginal Discharge Normal?

The vagina is lined by several layers of cells and is kept lubricated by mucus from the cervix. The vagina harbours large numbers of bacteria, which constitute its normal flora.

A combination of factors, including constant shedding of the vaginal wall cells into the vagina cavity which then mixes with cervical mucus, results in a normal physiological white discharge termed leucorrhoea. The quantity of the vaginal secretions varies throughout a woman’s menstrual cycle and does not indicate an infection.

When to Seek Treatment for a Vaginal Discharge

If there is any soreness or irritation accompanied with a vaginal discharge it may indicate an infection. A candida infection (thrush) typically has the appearance of curdled milk and can easily be treated with an over-the-counter yeast cream.

Other signs that one has an infection include a profuse offensive discharge, which can be greenish or blood-stained, and this usually warrants medical attention.

Is it Normal if My Breasts are Painful

During different periods of the menstrual cycle various hormonal changes take place and these can result in bilateral breast tenderness and a feeling that ones breasts are ‘full’. These are all the normal changes that the body goes through.

However, if the pain persists or one breast is much more painful than the other then medical attention should be sought. This said, any abnormal lumps that you notice in your breast must be seen by a health professional. Regular self breast examinations will ensure that you may spot any abnormalities early.

Do I Really Need a Pap Smear

Any sexually active woman should have regular pap smears which can detect cervical cancer early. Any precancerous cells that are found can be removed and this can prevent the development of cervical cancer. Usually if the pap smear is normal your doctor may tell you that you only need to follow up annually.

Are Terrible Menstrual Pains Normal

Fortunately, today there are various means to treat mild to severe menstrual pains. These range from over-the-counter analgesics to various hormonal contraceptives which may alleviate the pain associated with menstrual periods.

If the pain is severe and there are other worrying factors such as irregular periods or heavy periods it is best to visit a health professional for a complete examination.

Can I Still Enjoy Sex During Pregnancy

Many women feel inhibited about asking their doctor if it is still OK to have sexual intercourse during pregnancy. Some women find intercourse uncomfortable or are afraid that it may harm the baby or bring about premature labour.

There is no evidence that suggests sexual intercourse may have any damaging effects on the baby. Coitus can continue, if the couple wishes, up until the birth of the baby.
