Kameraz

Since setting out as a photojournalist I have only ever purchased camera equipment at Kameraz in Rosebank. Yes, they of the silly adverts. But when it comes to camera knowledge, great service, advice to suit your needs and budget, and the best prices in town, they are anything but foolish. That is why most professional photographers use them exclusively.

Owner Johan Greybe has been in the business for over 25 years. He first had the Fripps outlet in Hillbrow and he was, by his own admission, the one who switched the lights off in that part of town as the last of the creative support businesses that once flourished there. For the last 13 years he has operated out of a store in one of the quieter areas of the Rosebank shopping precinct.

‘We do not rely on foot traffic, but return business,’ says Johan. ‘The most important thing for us is the central location of the area and plentiful parking.’

Photographer Support

The one thing that sets Kameraz apart is its support for photographers from rank amateurs to leading professionals. They will hook you up with the camera that is best for your needs and point you in the right direction to learn the basics and develop from there.

They have regular promotions and each month they host a Super Sunday where professionals can sell their work and stallholders trade in everything photographic. Kameraz is also unique in that it will allow you to trade in most of your old equipment when upgrading, which also means that they have a wide range of used stock on sale.

Professional Advice

When purchasing digital photographic equipment most people are given the wrong advice. For starters, most shop assistants cannot even tell you whether you should be looking at a compact or SLR (single reflex camera with interchangeable lenses).

‘There are so many factors a purchaser should be looking at,’ says Johan. ‘It’s not just about megapixels. If you just want something for fun then by all means go for a compact, but if you’re more serious then an entry level SLR is the way to go. As you become more competent you can upgrade by adding to what you have or trade up to entry level professional. The prices of digital equipment are continually falling and features getting better, so you win all round.’

Nikon Coolpix L21

From compact to state-of-the-art professional cameras, the name Nikon is associated with quality and reliability. The leading and sexist brand amongst compact cameras is their Coolpix range.

Released earlier this year, the 8-million megapixel with 3,6x optical zoom Coolpix L21 features electronic vibration control (VR) to ensure consistently beautiful pictures and optimised image processing. One of the primary features of this beauty is that it uses normal AA batteries, which are readily available.
