The Windermere is fashionable. It takes what is missing from other establishments and makes it work in a stylish, à la mode way. You lack for nothing of your creature comforts. Simply put, it is worth every penny.

Located in Port Elizabeth, in the prestigious waterfront suburb of Humewood, it offers glorious views over Kings Beach. Originally a block of student digs, in 2003 it became an oasis from the city. Anne Read, the owner of this quintessential establishment wanted to create one of the top boutique hotels in South Africa.

Clean Lines

Clean lines and classic shades characterise the décor. Space is a delight and the natural light simply pours into the room, sharpening the modern, urban feel. The carpets are delicious to walk on barefooted and the white bathroom is heaven with glass shower door, basins and complimentary Molton Brown toiletries.

Outside, the rustic texture of stone contrasts beautifully with smooth marble, ceramics and wood. All in all the attention to details is exquisite and all furniture and doors were custom made. Haldane Martin, hailed as ‘decorator of the year’ in 2006, handcrafted the furnishings in the dining room.

Luxury Suites

All eight luxury suites are built around the courtyard, which leads to the reception area, drawing room and dining room. The largest room has a second connecting bedroom and is ideal for families. Even the courtyard is structured along the same clean lines and sophistication found in the rooms. The staff pride themselves on the sense of serenity it evokes away from the busy outside world

All rooms have a mini bar, digital safe, under floor heating, air-conditioning and heating. The extra length beds with cool cotton linen make for pleasurable rest, although if you are an insomniac you can count on the 24-hour room and bar service.

It’s almost as if you’re tempted never to leave your room and why should you when you have satellite TV, DVD and CD players as well as telephone and dedicated IT ports. The private balconies overlooking the city also provide stunning views over the ocean.

Kings Beach

The Windermere is a short stroll to Kings Beach named after King George VI, who swam here in 1947 during the royal visit. It also within walking distance of Humewood Beach, which was recently awarded the Blue Flag status for its cleanliness, constant lifeguard supervision and environmentally friendly status.

If you can be tempted to venture out of this comfortable haven then you can enjoy a round of golf, a safari or a day at the beach.
