Situated at 36 Stiemens Street, Braamfontein, is the Alexander Theatre, a rare gem in Johannesburg. It is a place that celebrates youth culture, showcasing the best DJ’s and rock bands.

A History

The Alexander Theatre is a cultural landmark with a rich with history and years of immortal theatre productions. Opened in 1951, it boomed for 30 years but closed 10 years ago… until now.

Revamping Braamfontein

Close to WITS, the venue brings in hoards of students ready to experience the new injection of life in Johannesburg. The Alex, as it is known amongst hipsters, is a place where even the most anxious of people lose their inhibitions, let their hair down and party it up at all the epic parties that take place there.

As you enter The Alex, with its revamped looks, checkered black and white tiling, inviting lighting and sense of freedom, you are elevated into a version of wonderland. There are three sections in the Alex, letting the countless partygoers have space to dance and, of course, drink.

The Décor and Vibe

The bottom floor is reminiscent of a French boudoir, while the main upper level is a dark, grey square room that puts you in the shadows, free to be you. Then there is the amphitheatre, with its leveled theatre with 550 seats and a round stage where bands like Die Antwoord and Goldfish play for their fans.

From personal experience I can honestly say that the parties that are thrown at The Alex are some of the best parties I have ever attended in Johannesburg. The crowd is their simply to have fun. What is great about the theatre is that it caters to all types.

Rock events, house events, dub step, break beats…. The list goes on and on. No one can deny the pull The Alex has over the cool kids of Johannesburg.

Find Yourself

If I had to sum up the Alex Theatre in one short sentence it would be this: ‘A place to party, a place to dance your heart out and a place to be you!!’
