‘Let’s meet at Scusi,’ is a common Johannesburg refrain. This is because the great food, friendly service, relaxed ambience and location of this popular Parkview bistro and sushi bar makes it the perfect place to get together with family and friends or cut that business deal.

Scusi Bistro

Since it opened eight years ago on the Tyrone Avenue shopping strip, Scusi has entrenched itself as a perennial favourite. With street seating and plenty of indoor space it is always buzzing.

Inside there are panoramic windows to keep you in touch with the treed nature of the suburb; leather couches for lounging, intimate table settings; and larger one’s should you want to spread out the daily newspapers on offer or set up your laptop to access their free WiFi and work the day away wired on coffee.

Confession Time

I have a confession to make. I used to live in the area and I made this my office. I know others do this too. I would arrive first thing in the morning, have a latte brought to me without having to ask, read the papers, set up my computer and be ready for my first meeting at nine.

Thing is, they knew this, but rather than chase me and the others out they made us welcome. It is that kind of place. And what a great office. Gentle music, soft lighting, eclectic décor, wonderful canteen and a well-stocked wine cellar.

Parkview

Parkview is the most treed suburb in Johannesburg. It is known as The Village, and it certainly has that feel – down to even having its own castle. Just down the road is Zoo Lake and all around are parks.

One of the oldest suburbs in Johannesburg, it has retained much of its character. Most of the trees that distinguish it are over 100 years old and many of the houses and buildings are national monuments. One of its most recognisable aspects is the short Tyrone Avenue shopping street with its quaint bookshops, boutiques and florists. Scusi fits neatly into it.

Breakfast Time

As a daytime restaurant, Scusi is renowned for its breakfasts. I like their Eggs Royal of a toasted English muffin topped with thinly sliced salmon, poached eggs cooked to your liking and covered with a velvety hollandaise sauce garnished with roasted rosa tomatoes.

They also have a nice selection of light and health breakfasts. Why not try their range of croissants or Mediterranean platter of freshly sliced seasonal fruit served with grilled halloumi and health toast.

Let’s do Lunch

Scusi have a full bistro menu ranging from gourmet sandwiches, burgers and wraps to pastas and light bites. There is also a daily specials menu that includes interesting soups and items such as Thai chicken curry.

Many opt for their sushi and sashimi platters from the sushi bar. Here you can have California and rainbow rolls; maki and nigiri; and fashion sandwiches or any combo you can think of. And there is a well-stocked walk-in cellar to complement your meal.

Let’s meet at Scusi.
