Admittedly, when one hears the title of the show, Nipple Caps and G-Strings, it is only natural that one’s mind may wander to the dark side and land up in the gutter. However, precluding what one might think, this one-woman show, though raunchy and a tad risqué, is a well-scripted and incredibly delivered piece which delves into the world of the stripper.

The Stripper’s Life

What the audience is treated to is vestiges of the stripper’s life without becoming too self-indulgent and sappy. Rather, the content is rendered with a surprising mix of pathos, quirky analysis, excellent humour and a down-to-earth attitude which immediately wins over the audience.

Gigi’s command of the English language is quite impressive, though it is indeed her Afrikaans twang and grammar mispronunciations that make her no-nonsense character (with the eye raising CV) so endearing. It brings out realness and makes the show believable.

The Male Customer

Gigi analyses the psyche of the ‘male customer’ – those seemingly perverted characters who frequent these inscrutable establishments where strip-poles, provocative underwear and downright raw sexuality abound. And what she unearths is really intuitive and funny.

Of course, let us not forget that Gigi herself (regardless of the BA honours degree) is a stripper and, yes, there exists some tantalising moments throughout the show. But these are not acted just to punctuate and shock, but rather are clever and altruistic additions to bring home certain aspects and lessons about such an industry.

The Art of Erotic Dancing

She proves that erotic dancing is indeed an art and one of the show’s hysterical highlights is when she calls members of the audience up on stage for  a bit of ‘Lap Dancing 101’ – the crash course!

Gigi holds the audience’s attention for a staggering 90 minutes plus, which is quite a feat for any one character show. And with a sanguine approach she harnesses a plethora of sexual discovery (or recovery for some), life in the real world that is the stripper’s, pushing the envelope in the bedroom to enhance a healthy sexual relationship as well as innocent love and marriage.

This show is indeed a must see, unless one is so conservative as to border on prude or frigid. It is witty, intelligent and thought provoking in many ways. Three cheers for Ms Gigi!
