Entropy is a creative loft space in Melville’s Bamboo Centre containing art, furniture, lighting and desireables that will transform your home.
Entropy
Entropy was opened in July by Marlene Jennings and Damon Garstang, both of whom have a legal and investment banking background. They felt a need for change and the result is a beautiful shop that is a reflection of their aesthetic tastes and passion for design and art.
They hand-picked the designers and artists that are showcased; with many of the works commissioned exclusively for the store. This is a reflection of their ongoing commitment to bridge the gap between creators and customers by pulling artists and designers from around the country and making their work more accessible to design enthusiasts in Jozi.
Design
Nature and the past are the inspirations for the furniture pieces by Casamento; a collective of furniture and thread artists and traditional fibre upholsterers. Focusing on mid-century seating and needlecrafts, they marry old shapes with new ideas using natural and recycled fibres that are environmentally friendly and non-allergenic. At the other end of the spectrum are Peet van Straaten’s RAW range of plywood furniture and Katie Thompson’s stunning REcreate pieces from recycled material.
Porky Heffer, who established the creative collective Animal Farm, is responsible for some of the more eclectic lighting found at Entropy. David Krynauw, on the other hand, makes unconventional and inspiring chandeliers from salvaged wood and the trees he grows on his farm. And if you’re looking for something to fill in that corner, Ronel Jordaan’s felt ‘stones and pebbles’ are perfect.
Artists
Among Entropy’s featured artists are digital art photographer Aldon McLeod; photographer Francois Swanepoel; sculptor and animation artist Francois van Reenen; acrylic artist Marlise Keith, who has been described as having a ‘brooding, vivid original voice’; urban artists MissYuckie; and Nikki Swanepoel, whose work emphasises the bond between animals and people.
Entropy has curated a collaborative art exhibition,
